The Nagel’s are an average white family living on a smallholding. The Khumalo’s, an extremely wealthy family in the new South Africa. Gladys Khumalo is a bitter woman, despite the fact that Justin, her son, has become a doctor.
Doctor Justin Khumalo is on duty when the ambulance with the Nagel’s arrives at casualties. He hands out orders and stands back while the badly injured family are admitted. To him, they are patients, people without color.
Earlier tonight he and his mother were at the performance where Celest Nagel led the orchestra. Justin wanted to see the extremely talented young pianist perform.
Gladys went with him for only one reason: because it empowered her. As a black woman, she was allowed to sit in the concert hall that in her childhood was only meant for whites.
